MARCH 1, 2006 – APRIL 20, 2018
“He has cancer.” Three words no one ever wants to hear. Three words you fear. Three words we heard on the morning of March 24th, 2018. The next word we learned was hemangiosarcoma. We were immediately told that there was no cure and that we would be lucky to have a few weeks together, if not just days.
After all he’s done for us, we couldn’t imagine not doing all we possibly could for him. We couldn’t save him, but we could still care for him. We took Toby to multiple specialists, asked tough questions, and researched endlessly – but we were left frustrated. We were disturbed to find such little information and limited treatment options for a cancer so common and so hated by the veterinary community.
There is no cure – yet, but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing that can be done to diagnose sooner, improve treatments, and offer more loving care. There is more we can do help extend happy times, delay the inevitable, share knowledge, and support dogs and their families through the fight against hemangiosarcoma. We couldn’t save Toby, but we promised him we would do what we could to help others. #TeamToby
Toby fought hard against hemangiosarcoma, but eventually, on he developed a hemorage that was too much for his little body to handle. On April 20th, 2018, we had to make the loving decision to let him go. We had 12 wonderful, priceless years with our Toby dog, all capped off with a full month to spoil him, love on him, and prepare to say goodbye. That we were so lucky to have so much time was a gift.
